RIOS Studio Director Taek Kim has twenty years of professional experience leading innovative designs of various typologies and programmatic challenges with a strong architectural vision. His design approach is focused on enhancing the user experience, building works that are playful yet thoughtful. His process-driven design promotes multimodal experiments through acts of making, and guides us toward unique, novel design solutions. 

Taek's work experiences have contributed to many completed high-rise residential, commercial towers, retail, mixed-use, and cultural institutions in the United States and around the world. At RIOS, he has been fundamental to our submission for the 2023 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism that explores the intersection of architecture and landscape for building resilience for Seoul’s urban future, as well as a new large mixed-use development in East LA, Lincoln Boulevard rehabilitation, and a new residential complex near Chinatown.

Low Investment, High Impact: Creative Approaches to Adaptive Reuse for the Rest of Us

Historic districts in older cities, with their exposed brick and ancient timber, make for enticing adaptive reuse projects, but how do we approach the more recently built urban areas around the country that don’t have those great bones? We’re talking about buildings and neighborhoods that are visibly outdated and no longer well positioned to compete for workplace, hospitality, and residential uses. While these places are too new to be replaced due to higher carbon footprints and renovation costs, they can be reimagined and reinvented using far fewer resources than ground-up development.
