Mia Lehrer, FASLA founded Studio-MLA with a vision to improve quality of life through landscape. Her courageous approach to landscape design—distinguished for its advocacy of sustainable and people-friendly public places and catalytic work for a climate-appropriate future—has defined her as one of the great voices in modern-day landscape architecture. Drawing inspiration from geology and natural processes, she sparks the team’s inventive spirit to craft environments that foster human connection, unite communities, and restore ecological balance.

The studio’s reputation for creativity, pragmatism, and accountability spans a wide range of scales and geographies, from the master planning of cities to the design of intimate plazas and gardens. Mia has led the design and implementation of numerous significant private and public projects. These include the redevelopment of the Hollywood Park Racetrack and the creation of the new SoFi Stadium and associated parks, the Fair Park Community Park in Dallas, the revitalization of San Francisco’s historic Levi’s Plaza, the nature gardens at the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, as well as various urban river-related initiatives like the Rio Tietê in São Paulo, the Los Angeles River Taylor Yard G2 Park, and habitat restoration and public access master planning along the Santa Ana River. With offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco, the studio, comprised of 50 talented individuals, has garnered diverse and award-winning commissions both in California and worldwide.

Ms. Lehrer has actively contributed to numerous academic, professional, and public sector advisory boards. Her notable appointments include serving as a member of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, appointed by President Barack Obama, and holding positions such as the Cultural Affairs Commission, the Zoning Advisory Committee, and the Mayor’s Design Advisory Panel in Los Angeles, as well as her current role as a Commissioner for the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power. She is a sought-after speaker on resilient landscape and urban design, environmental and sustainability issues, and designing for equity and inclusion in public processes. Her accomplishments have earned numerous accolades, including Fast Company’s World’s Most Innovative Companies of 2023, the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum’s 2021 National Design Award for Landscape Architecture, the LaGasse Medal from the American Society of Landscape Architects, as well as Community Legacy Awards from the Los Angeles Business Council and the Westside Urban Forum. Originally from El Salvador, Ms. Lehrer holds a Bachelor of Arts from Tufts University and a Master of Landscape Architecture from Harvard University Graduate School of Design. She was recognized as a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 2010.
